Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” is truly something genuinely special from start to finish. Like any great coming-of-age story, it’s a relatable, hilarious, and heartfelt portrayal of life, youth, and all the angst and struggles that come along with it, but it’s executed with a point of view that’s so brutally honest, realistic, and emotionally infectious that it manages to stand on its own beautifully. It all shines on the screen thanks to brilliantly assured writing and direction, wonderfully realized and fleshed characters, and pitch-perfect performances across the board, particularly Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf giving some of the best work I’ve seen so far this year. It’s just a delight! Bravo, Gerwig!
