A Ghost Story ★★★½

I've never been so shocked about a total lack of walkouts in the cinema as I was during this. The absence of steps/doors opening behind me was almost distracting.

Gets suuuuper interesting once you know Ghostboy is our protagonist rather than Rooney; up until that point... ehhh. I'd be fascinated to know what anyone actually got from ten fucking minutes of pie-eating other than "it's Rooney Mara eating a pie". It's like Lowery devised that scene with the specific purpose of generating thousands of all caps letterboxd reviews that refer to her as 'Miss Patty' for some reason. Honestly, please explain to me what was to be gained from all that.

But yeah, I kinda loved almost everything beyond the point where Rooney vacates the house. Loved the other ghost, Ghostfleck's interactions with and observation of new tenants of his land, both after and before his lifetime, even loved Will Oldham's dumb nihilist monologue (surely he was cast because of his far dumber 'universe is a falling tear' monologue in Old Joy?). If I ever get around to a rewatch, I think at least another half star is guaranteed, but for now...

...that god damn pie...
