Mike’s review published on Letterboxd:
The first half of West Side Story is nearly perfect. Production design, cinematography, songs, lyrics, everything was perfect. Rita Moreno!!!! She slaps and STEALS the whole show.
The second half wasn't as good. While not awful it wasn't on the same level of that first hour and a half. The romance was so flawed and weird. I get what the movie is trying to say about hate and ignorance and stupid stereotypes but the way it was portrayed on the romance was problematic. There's a death (which I won't spoil) that it's supposed to have a big impact on the relationship but nothing happened. They just blamed it on the whole hate/ignorance thing and kept going. Wtf?
This was made in 1961 so I'll take it.
