Ghost in the Shell

Ghost in the Shell ★★★★★

If a technological feat is possible, man will do it. Almost as if it's wired into the core of our being.
-Major Motoko Kusanagi

Akira, Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell were my introduction to anime feature films oh so many years ago and they blew my feeble little mind back then. To be honest I don't think I've ever seen another animated film since that had that same effect in the last 20 years or so.

This film ridiculously crams iconic action sequences mixed with a dense plot while posing philosophical questions about what it means to be human in 83 damn minutes! What kind of cartoon is this?!

Manages to introduce some fascinating characters, but none surpass Motoko Kusanagi. There's no "alpha male" character in this movie because Motoko is the alpha to all other characters. No matter how tough anyone is, you get the feeling that each character present is intimidated by her. She's the brains, the brawn and the philosopher.

I've seen this movie countless times in the last 20 years or so, so maybe my perspective is a bit off, but to me Motoko Kusanagi is one of the greatest female sci-fi characters of all time. Always felt bad for Batou who I thought is obviously in love with her.
