Maniac Cop

Maniac Cop ★★★½

Maniac Cop isn't a perfect film but it hits that nostalgic sweet spot because it's the first film I remember my Uncle renting out for me and my brother when we were about 5-6 years old. His idea of babysitting was to sit us in front of the craziest shit he could find at the video rental store.

I loved this and it quickly spiralled into The Evil Dead series and the rest is history. My mind corrupted for eternity. I'm so thankful.

Anyway, this movie ain't perfect but it's has a great cast in Tom Atkins, Robert Z'Dar, Richard Roundtree and Bruce Campbell (who plays a total asshole here), some brutal kills and a typically sharp Larry Cohen script keeps it on it's toes but the most memorable thing here is the hypnotic Jay Chattaway score.

Overall, this might move a little slow for modern audiences, but it still an entertaining slice of 80's NYC schlock and the social commentary still packs a punch - perhaps more now than ever.
