All Quiet on the Western Front ★★★★½

This is a depressing movie, and I mean that as a compliment. It really puts you in your place and makes you think.

This is graphic beyond any war movie I’ve seen before, and it needed to be. WW1 was terrible, and this captures it perfectly. The scenes are hauntingly beautiful and impressively scary.

I wish there was more exposition in the beginning so that we could get to know these kids before they went to war. Also, I’m not sure about the book, but man was it a dumb way to kill off Stanislaus. Did they really have to go back to that farm…it seemed improbable and unnecessary to me.

This movie has a great feeling of dread the whole way through. Though there are moments of happiness, they are fleeting.

Very good movie, but not one I can heart because it is not a fun watch.
