Here Comes Mr. Jordan

Here Comes Mr. Jordan ★★½

The 1978 Warren Beatty remake was one of my favorite films back in the day, but the original just doesn't sit well with me at all. Sure, it's got a likable enough leading man in Robert Montgomery, and a very fetching Evelyn Keyes as his leading lady, but let's face it, Joe Pendelton gets seriously screwed over in multiple ways by his fussy angelic guardian bureaucrats, and no palaver from Claude Rains about how everything will work out in the end can paper over the fact that Joe is ultimately killed by having his personality stripped away from him. When Mr. Jordan waves and says, "So long, Champ," I didn't find it heartwarming at all, just seriously creepy.
