About what I expected: a by-the-numbers biopic powered by a charismatic lead performance and the deliciously overwrought music of Queen. The music and Mercury deserve better. Madeleine L'Engle's kid-lit classic presents obvious adaptation challenges. It's heavier on cool concepts than incident, most of the conflict is provided by an incorporeal antagonist and it's just really freaking short. For the novel to work as a conventional studio film, the narrative needs to be expanded a little, and IT should probably be given more of a tangible form (the last time I read it, I thought The Man with Red Eyes could be the movie's Darth Vader).
