The Next Generation Patlabor: Tokyo War

watched the extended “gray ghost” version. a lot better than i expected going in, just cuz the show this is based on is more or less a workplace comedy. but this is the real patlabor 3, a direct sequel of 2 with some tsuge sympathizers planning their own guerrilla attack against tokyo. i think i’m just not that into the new generation though, cuz their labors suck dick and are always breaking down. and if they do work they have…

    “nations have no real friends.”

it’s so badass that the labors have maybe two minutes of screen time in this. while deceptively light on “action,” i was thrilled by the relentless tick of its editing. in a lot of ways i find the editing to be the most interesting formal quality of oshii’s work. how to articulate this? not quite sure

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society

    ★★★★

great as a riff on the original super spartan and drive slave manga arcs but loses something in resorting to the same tired puppet master rehashings, especially in the major’s last brain dive. stand alone complex’s bone dry tone and frequently impenetrable bureaucratic plottings, when stretched to feature length, become something akin to a mood piece…the soul’s everyday concessions in the digital age. mass destruction and salvage of children in a corporate fascist technocracy. raw data and the manipulation of the masses. being a sexy trans person with cool hair and great tits and having to deal with it all.

this one has dimmed severely in my mind over time!! last prominent use of black and yellow face in a hollywood film? i’m talking, like. 70% of the nearly all white cast doing some kind of birth of a nation shit. i liked this one as a kid cuz it seemed to have a real political message and shit but now that i’m not a stupid child i kinda see this for what it is. it’s hard to be an old white racist in a changing world!!

interesting admission from miike on the dvd extras:

"when i see them now, because they were shot many years ago, i find things i would change if i were to shoot them again. it could be a lack of technique, but at the same time i believe i've lost something as time has passed, and i'm trying now to compensate for that with technique. when i see films i shot many years ago, and find something i'd do now or…
