A pretty good pre-code film that has what you'd expect from a Cagney/Blondell vehicle. There's zippy dialog, plenty of slaps, and a narrative that feels a bit rushed and underdeveloped. Speaking of slaps this film features two great slaps with Cagney just randomly smacking a poor pawnshop clerk for no reason and Blondell slapping the sense out of her coworker for no good reason. Slaps aside I actually really enjoyed the focus on the cons in this film. I'm always…

This film really doesn't hold back its punches and I love that. Technically this film is really good and crisp although I'm not a fan of all the camerawork (I will always dislike handheld static shots ). The score and the acting are all really good too but narratively is where this film shines the brightest. This film tackles issues of male victims, the inaction/cowardice of loved ones, the parallel between the lawyer's actions in public vs private and the hypocrisy of even "good" people. All while walking a very fine line. Heavy but great.

No need to comment too much on a movie this famous. The cinematography, score and Eastwood are all amazing. This might be my personal favorite Leone movie. The final showdown is one of the greatest showdowns in cinema history. Outstanding throughout.

The score is amazing and the film is gorgeous to look at so already I'm sold. It's far less a narrative film than it is a poetic look at war and the victims not fighting. The war itself is replaced with nature (mist, rivers, birds), folk songs, and documentary footage. The aftermath of these moments are poetic vignettes dealing with various aspects of war. Just a great piece of experimental/poetic cinema.
