I really think I love this little thing. In premise it sounds too romantic, but the flick itself feels weirdly practical to me. Maybe I’ve watched Wes Anderson movies too many times and now his weird little dollhouses feel realistic but I just like that he treats tiny moments and momentary emotions with grandeur.
After a couple years of questionable leading man performances it’s delightful to see Chalamet perfectly deployed as an anxious self obsessed twink. Jeffrey Wright!! I love this guy, 2/2 on the year. Will be thinking about Del Toro’s prison introduction monologue for a long time. Little disappointed with Desplat on a first listen but maybe will grow on me. A really delightful ending moment.
