The French Dispatch

The French Dispatch ★★★★½

So many movies and TV shows that are supposed to be about good writers are afraid to include much actual writing lest they expose their characters as hacks or frauds. The French Dispatch actually has the confidence to delight in its own wordiness and show us each of the characters not just as individuals but as writers with their own styles and voices. I know it's become unfashionable in some circles to still be impressed with Wes Anderson's bag of tricks – here we are again with the modular sets that move around and break away like pages in a pop-up book – but this movie has so much energy and nerve and it's just plain fun as a motherfucker.
