Matisse van Rossum’s review published on Letterboxd:
I thought Evil Dead II hit the absolute high point of ridiculous. Boy, was I wrong. Although while Evil Dead II was just a series of ridiculous turns and overacting still set in a story that maintains some semblance of the horror genre, Army of Darkness just takes the bold leap into silliness. There's nothing even remotely scary about this film, or much that would even place it into the horror genre in my opinion, unless you consider the presence of skeletons and some kind of zombie-looking things to be all that's required to make a horror film. That being said, if you've seen the first two films in this trilogy, you can't really be expecting horror, so you're not disappointed when you don't find it.
Much like Evil Dead II though, Army of Darkness is simply hilarious. But unlike Evil Dead II, by the end, I was pretty over it. It very much feels like Sam Raimi is just trying to see how ridiculous he can be. And don't get me wrong, it's great and it's laugh out loud funny, but it's also not anything new. It also features some of the worst camerawork I've seen in a long time, which just makes it cheesier, and it feels like the effects got lazier after Evil Dead II.
One thing this film left me pondering, especially having now finished the trilogy, is whether Bruce Campbell is really a terrible actor or if he's a great actor who's really good at being a terrible actor. Some of his facial expressions and the way he delivers some of his lines just seem way too bad to be real. But this is part of the series' charm and I really wouldn't have it any other way. Whether you're a good actor or a bad actor, Bruce Campbell, just keep being you.
