Matisse van Rossum’s review published on Letterboxd:
I've seen Hot Fuzz what seems like a million times, but before last night it had actually been several years since I last saw it. And oh boy, did I forget what a riot this film is. I was laughing through the whole thing like it was my first ever viewing, and being sick with the flu, I nearly hacked up both my lungs, but it was so worth it for this gem.
I have yet to see The World's End, the third part of the Cornetto Trilogy, but I think I love Hot Fuzz more than Shaun of the Dead. Every little thing just hits the mark perfectly. It has some of the best comedic timing I've ever seen in a film and it continues to deliver, from the first scene to the last. And you really couldn't ask for a better, more talented cast for a film like this. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a dream team who complement each other so well it's like they aren't even acting. There are also some great little cameos scattered throughout the film by wonderful actors such as Bill Nighy.
It's also one of the greatest homage films I've ever seen. I'm not typically a fan of cookie cutter action films, but Hot Fuzz looks on them with reverence and respect, not parody. And it is, in itself, just as much an action movie as it is a comedy. Normally I don't like watching violence just for violence's sake, because it's boring, but I just can never get enough of the action and gore in this film. It's just executed so perfectly an hilariously. There's something truly special about watching Simon Pegg leap over a fence and kick a shotgun-wielding old woman square in the face, or watching Nick Frost take down a different murderous old woman on a bike by clotheslining her with a car door as she rides by. Hot Fuzz is definitely one of my favorite comedies and it's probably my favorite action film of all time.
