Matisse van Rossum’s review published on Letterboxd:
While Stan Winston's Pumpkinhead has a lot of potential, I feel like it ultimately wasted it. It's got a great look, with a rich, dusty environment and some pretty eerie set pieces. And with a great creature design, you'd expect that Pumpkinhead has all the makings of a good horror film. But I really just found myself kind of bored and underwhelmed by the time it was over. I was intrigued by the first act, which started off slowly and did a good job of establishing characters and motive. But once the killing started, I started to lose interest. The kills were repetitive an unexciting. I got tired of seeing characters being pulled up into trees or up onto roofs by their faces or getting backhanded through windows. These kills just seem lazy for such an excellently designed creature.
The cast is decent for the most part. Lance Henrikson's performance is pretty good, although not his best. Most of the teenagers are pretty poor actors, but the worst of them die first so we don't have to suffer them too long. The script isn't bad, just kind of mediocre. It's overall a great concept, just not executed to its full potential. I wanted to like it a lot more than I did. It was just an unfortunate flop for me.
