    Luca

    ★★★½

Luca is a decent Pixar movie that feels tied down by being a Disney product. Between the heavy queer subtext, that is still within the confines of being releasable within homophobic shitholes like China and Russia, and the editing and voice-acting that is not always up to par with Pixar’s usual quality, you will find a respectable coming off age movie. Luca has charming, likeable characters and Pixar's animation keep impressing in how lifelike, yet stylish it can be. However,…

    ★★★★

In true Lanthimos fashion 'Nimic' is a bizarre and unsettling, yet oddly funny short film. Filled with Kubrickian zooms and fascinating unusual characters. The use of music and sound is simply amazing. Not sure if this would have worked as a feature, but it certainly left me wanting more.

The neon demon is so stylish you will weep neon. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about a film, and the neon demon delivers and then some with plenty of style, blood and general fuckedupness. It centers on the seemingly innocent Jesse a freshly started model that quickly ascends in the industry creating jealousy among a…

The Norwegian disaster film Bølgen (The wave) is a showcase of spectacular effects with the beautiful Geirangerfjord as backdrop. Kristoffer Joner does greatly as the lead and gives the film's best performance. However the script is filled with cliches and contrivances, the dialogue also suffers from something sadly most Norwegian films suffer from; corny dialogue. Geiranger is used to stunning effect, the film is generally well shot. The wave itself (tough we only briefly see it) looks fantastic. It is…
