(Hoop-Tober Head Start)

Chapter II of XXXI

This was really...corny? I don't know, it seemed more over the top and sillier than the first film - "Gee, just like every sequel! Aren't we smart!?" - most notably in the acting of the new cast members. It does however throw a lot of clever ideas around, like the fact that the events of the first film have now been adapted into a film and that a new Ghostface killer murders someone at a screening, thereby further traumatizing Neve Campbell's character. That's a smart direction to take the story, not just plotwise but also thematically - dare I say "themetacally" - with the whole "does violent entertainment make us violent?" aspect. It seems however the filmmakers could've spent more time focusing on that plotline instead of that pointless kill on the blond girl (which was there because...why exactly?) or the cheesy romance between Courteney Cox and David Arquette. It's still a fine slasher, but the first is more memorable and less goofy. Sorry, Kevin Williamson: this sequel does not trump the original.
