Pickman's Model

Pickman's Model ★★★½

👨🏻‍🎨 "Pickman’s Model " 👨🏻‍🎨
Directed by Keith Thomas.
Based on a shortstory by  H. P. Lovecraft.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Ep 5

It’s a gothic tale about a young art student Will (Ben Barnes) who meets a new classmate, a mysterious artist Richard Pickman (Crispin Glover).
Initially intrigued by Pickman’s unusual art work at the class, Will agrees to see Pickman's personal gallery of his terrifying paintings, which will turn his life into a nightmare.

The short explores the power of art and its effect on the human psyche, our attraction to darkness and the unknown, the desire for catharsis.

As a horror lover myself, I have always been interested in these topics.
From early childhood, I was fascinated by the thrill and excitement of frightening visuals, and although some of them fucked up my psyche pretty bad (I still have a strong arachnophobia), I am addicted to horror catharsis.

"Pickman’s Model" does a great job of showing how someone could be haunted by certain images for the rest of their lives.

"Your paintings infect my mind."

Ben Barnes was stunning and great, as usual.
He definitely has a portrait of himself at the attic.
Glad he brought his journey with art horror full circle.

Crispin Glover with this weird accents was perfect as Pickman.
He was so sincere and desperate to share his story, trauma and work with a friend. I was touched by his performance.

- I know you want to see my new paintings. The finest I done. I need you to see ‘em.
- No. No, Dickie.

I loved it's dark gothic atmosphere and beautiful cinematography with some strong terrific visuals.
Pickman’s paintings by Vincent Proce and Lisa Cowen were absolutely brilliant!
CGI was good and there was a decent amount of practical gore.

Holy shit THAT ENDING was even MORE BRUTAL than the ending of “The Autopsy”.

- Dickie, it causes madness…
- It’s the world that’s mad, Will.
