I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore ★★★½

“You asked for help, I asked for help. That's how things get done. Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to you.”

violent movies always go so well for me until fingers or whole hands get maimed and then i get all nauseous and loopy 😭 Macon Blair personally out to get to me with that one scene huh.

clearly carries Saulnier’s influence on its sleeve, which is no surprise since the two of them have been collaborating for years. not as strong in narrative and atmosphere but visually just as mesmerizing. a good first feature playing with the same themes of alienation, justice and social oddities through (some more some less) unhinged characters like Ruth and Tony. i am fully onboard with Elijah Wood going for these weird unsettling indie roles, he’s great in them.

haven’t we all had a self-destructive week like this haha. absurdly funny how fast this unwitting woman spirals into a series of violent vigilante exploits. but even when considered in the context of its dark eccentricity the last act kinda undermines a lot of what it sets up before that? Ruth’s mental state and motivations get all jumbled and contradictory, and it seems everyone but her came out the better in the end. fucked up last scene if you ask me
