Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi ★★★★★

i watched this twice on opening day, told everyone it was my favorite film of 2017 and that was it. you can imagine the kind of apprehension i had going into it with all that has happened in the two years since but i finally sat down and braced myself to actually dissect this. boy oh boy what an EVENT it is.

i’m not sure why there is such a divide in the fandom regarding this one specifically because it’s like... the same as Empire Strikes Back in so many ways although i’ll admit that Rian Johnson (literally) burns down some bridges to actually break with the formula. which i LOVE. not a middle finger to the saga but rather a helping hand to lift it over the threshold into more original content territory. he set out to deconstruct the ethos this franchise is based on and succeeds with bravura while still casting it into the blockbuster format of incredible visuals and occasionally swashbuckling adventure that we’ve come to know and love.

my mans Poe Dameron develops so nicely in this and new addition Admiral Holdo gets one of the most breathtaking and mf badass moments that galaxy has ever seen. most importantly though Luke Skywalker gets a character arc that i never expected but am absolutely ecstatic about. the little blonde twink became the bitter old master. i feel that. also felt the throne room scene like crazy wOw that shit is next level. Johnson’s visual theme captures the darker more conflicted tone so well.
