    Only Yesterday 1991

    Dushine

    ★★★★½ Rewatched by Dushine 31 May 2023 2

My experiences watching Only Yesterday aren't unique. In fact I think, much in the spirit of the film, they are retable and shared by many of us.

I saw the film in 2015 and I liked it, but didn't quite love it. Whatever my expectations were at the time, it was certainly not the kind of film I thought I was going to see. Surprisingly though, both my brother and I agreed that it was a film we'd appreciate a…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

The final moments of the film proclaim that in the end, it all catches up to you. Either this suggests that O-Dog, the chaotic, violent friend of the Biblically-dubbed Caine, is fated to meet a grisly end, or it rings with irony as he remains among the living while the credits roll.

Caine himself is depicted as having grown up in circumstances that provided little opportunity for a straight life (the most prominent flashback features his father in an almost…

There’s no reason on earth a movie starring Jennifer Lopez as the lead should be almost 120 minutes long.

    Cinematic excellence across the board.

I know most of these movies are dismissed as "dumb action movies" and that doesn't really bother me. Nor do I think an action movie needs to be "smart" to be respectable.

However, this entry really did a lot to sum up the themes of the series: Sticking to "rules" is a loser's game especially when the rules are made principally to serve those at the top and can be changed at a whim by…
