    ★★★★★

"Without me there wouldn't be any Paramount Studios!"

Perhaps the greatest film about Hollywood made by Hollywood, Sunset Boulevard cements Billy Wilder as one of the sharpest writers and directors in the industry.

Forcing us to reflect on the fragility of the more materialistic facets of our lives, Wilder concocts the perfect combination of cynicism, melodrama and amusement which all comes full circle in the most satisfying way.

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain

"Why must one always talk? Often one shouldn't talk, but live in silence"

Jean Luc Godard's deconstruction of femininity in Vivre Sa Vie feels like his most personal venture.

His search for absolute truth in the soul of Nana, played by the indomitable Anna Karina , is gorgeously meta and honest, contributing to a film that does not justify itself with any solutions or broad statements, it simply just is.

Theres a reason 'God' is in his name.

    ★★

    "Loyal. Brave. True"

The three words above are repeated agonisingly in Mulan , Disney's latest live-action remake. They mean nothing, as the film takes the original's themes and subject matter to uninspired heights in its dull 2 hour runtime.

Much of the film feels forced, with no little to no effort given to develop the characters as the film jumps from scene to scene.  The writing is also incredibly lazy, which is made more glaring by the film's jarring narration,…

    Never Rarely Sometimes Always

    ★★★★

"If it's positive, is there any way it could be negative?"

Never Rarely Sometimes Always offers a powerful and provoking look into mental health, societal pressures and teenage angst. Driven by compelling performances from Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder , the film drifts in Autumn's cerebration, always wandering but never judging. Shots are often framed to illustrate her viewpoint, leaving the audience in a perpetual state of reflection and observation.

In times like these where content is lacking, this is a must-watch.

    Toy Story 4

    ★★★½

There is inevitable trepidation prior to entering a fourth entry of any franchise, with strong justification needed to warrant spending even more time with the same characters again. This is why the sentiment towards Toy Story 4 has been mixed, amplified by the emotionally satisfying conclusion we got to the toy's journey with Andy nearly 9 years ago.

The greatest praise that can be given to Toy Story 4 is that it is a bold, different and fresh take on…
