It's impossible to see this without thinking of Picnic at Hanging Rock, which I suppose isn't a bad choice as far as cultural referents go.
Too enamored of moral ambiguity by half. To make a film's protagonist devoid of any redeeming characteristics save illiteracy raises no interesting questions. Perhaps the movie would be interesting if it had something to say about West German memory of World War II, but the plot is far too narrow and too bizarre for anything like that. Instead we are left with the story of a lonely statutory rapist.
