Not as good as I remembered from when I was a kid, but still okay.
Let me start this by saying Joe Swanberg SUCKS. Like royally. Okay, now to the movie. It’s got an interesting premise and moves quickly, but that ending really is a let down. Movie reminded me of Strangers and a little seen horror movie called ATM. I was intrigued to see where it was going, but a movie like this relies heavily on the finish, which stunk.
Nice to see Jeremy Allen White (Shameless) in a solid sized role. Always liked him. Also, what’s up with the score of this movie? It’s very bombastic and NOT needed at all.
When the movie starts, and the two leads start dancing outside their car, and the music cuts off, and they keep going, I knew I was in for a mess. Then, when they are talking on a bench at school, and a vanilla ice looking character pulls up in a tricked out ride and they both joke about him being “the 1%” as they were just discussing how one of the friends was going to Yale, I knew this movie…
I have now seen three films from this director and I haven't liked one. The Handmaiden is by far his worst. It's a soft core porn disguised as a some sort of love triangle thriller. The movie is downright irresponsible in how it objectifies its two lead female performances. I don't get the hype. It's crap. Sure it looks nice, but I felt dirty watching it. Like some perv was getting off on this.
