Lamb ★★★

The ingeniously odd Icelandic folklore, cosy cable knits, and imposing antagonist are elements that genuinely worked for me in Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Lamb.

It’s just a shame then that this wilderness chiller of an unconventional upbringing just isn’t quite the sum of its parts.

There’s atmospheric dread present and shots of sheep leering are surely unsettling, but Lamb is mostly predictable with missed potential. The brother-in-law subplot felt like wasted padding and certain scenes were repetitive. I wish matters escalated much sooner and that the film’s antagonist had a much more meatier role.
