Ian West’s review published on Letterboxd:
Ridley Scott’s entry in the shitty no nonsense down on his luck cop movie and naturally it looks beautiful.
Kinda feels like a buddy cop movie at times, and whether it’s dingy nyc or smoky neon japan it’s filled with hazy gleems of light coming through poorly drawn shades galore and that’s a big mood. The flow kinda gets a little derailed after a certain beheading happens, but this is still a very solid thriller with more violence than I remembered—plus Ken Takakura is amazing and a treasure to acting. Found the blu at a local record shop for $2 and immediately laughed at the terrible artwork they used.
The poster used here on lb is the same as my dads old vhs tape that I used to stare at all the time—years before we finally watched this together in the 90’s I used to think this was a futuristic cop movie! Glad a gave it a revisit... it’s way less futuristic than I remembered lol.
