Ian West’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is more lovecraftian than the recent Color Out of Space and more along the lines of what I wanted that movie to be—less Lovecraft stereotypes and more emphasis on eco-horror cosmic dread.
I still liked that movie, but I appreciate this just as effective with less of a budget and never gets too full of itself or drops a million purple/pink/red/blue neon bs that I’m so sick of now. The small, tight cast does a solid job, and the first act setup goes by fast enough so acts 2 and 3 deliver that lurking terror eco-mutation cosmic body horror stuff I dig so much. Cool movie that knows exactly what it is, goes for the bleakness, doesn’t show us too much, and has a good concept on actual lovecraftian ideals instead of the usual showcase of pop culture Lovecraft tropes (we live in world where you can buy a plushie Cthulhu at any mall).
A tight (tighter than most of the meandering negative reviews I’ve read would’ve led me to believe btw) 80 something minute menagerie of contagion fog and weird dumpling pods washing ashore with goo jellyfish. Nice debut, bleak and engaging.
Solid little movie.
