Larry Cohen’s raw nyc crime horror sci-fi conspiracy jam masterwork. God Told Me To features just about every ingredient I look for in a movie and moodwise reminds me, in a way, of the 70’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers... but more street, more real... more Cohen.
One of my all timers—super original gritty nyc guerilla filmaking that’s way ahead of its time mixing science/religion a la Prince of Darkness, manic/disorienting public mass shooting scenes, procedural cop stuff but way more interesting, Andy Kaufman shows up as a murderous cop, abduction scenes, a beautiful Richard Lynch appears as the homicidal alien messiah, and the third act is to fucking die for as God Told Me To blends genres seamlessly for a crisp 91 minutes. Those final few moments of screen time are up there for me as one of the most chilling final shots/line deliveries ever put to film.
Definitely my favorite Larry Cohen jam—Criminally overlooked by genre aficionados everywhere and that’s a damn shame because I think this is one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
King Cohen, indeed. We miss you Larry.
