Rewatched by Ian West
Three O'Clock High 1987
Feels like a frantic 80’s teen comedy mishmash of High Noon and After Hours soundwaved by a low key amazing Tangerine Dream score. Fits in with other comedies of its era but not as sentimental or caricature driven—this just feels like ‘one of those days’.
First revisit in a couple of years via the recent blu and I fell in love with this all over again. I kinda love Casey Siemaszko as the lead and his portrayal of a middle of the road high school kid who isn’t a Breakfast Club caricature... he just feels like a real kid who’s thrown into a bad situation against the monolith known as Buddy. His first encounter with Buddy in the bathroom (his hand on his arm!) is awesome and kinda terrifying as far as bully encounters go—from that point on the tension mounts (and the score!) and the ol’ ticking clock frantic nightmare scenario starts to kick in.
I was so involved in this movie and that pulsating Tangerine Dream score that I actually watched it again this morning and came to the realization that it’s definitely one of those ‘anytime, anywhere’ movies for me—highly overlooked if you ask me... give me this over any of the 80’s teen comedy movies, I think this one slays them all.
