Nothing groundbreaking on display here, but The Rental doesn’t feel like it’s going for that. It’s just a moody, well-acted slow burn that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Extra points for the last few minutes.
Calling The First Purge’s themes “heavy handed” would be an understatement. The goofy characters are the high point of the film, but Marisa Tomei (the single recognizable name) is totally wasted. The script is physically painful and unintentionally(?) funny most of the time, as this ended up being more comedy than horror for me. The action is well-shot though, and when the actual purging is going on there’s fun to be had. But be warned, when the credits start to roll there’s a no-bullshit trailer for the upcoming Purge TV series. That’s just ridiculous. Who could possibly care?!

M:I Fallout is fucking awesome. So awesome, in fact, that my gut reaction is to say it’s my favorite entry in the franchise. Do yourself a favor and see it in IMAX. The action is top-notch: more of the good stuff from Rogue Nation. The final setpiece, especially when it goes into IMAX mode, is thrilling.
