Artificial metaphors and musical numbers create Annette's identity, yet not all is what it seems. Constructs of celebrity and fame lead to the unravelment of love, creativity and virtue. The complexities of making and then exploiting art for the public becomes corrupting and devastating for most involved. Everything here is a beautiful dream that turns into a damaging reality—the tragic and ludicrous wrapped in one piece of singularly ambitious filmmaking.
