I've always found it odd when people say something to the tune of, "Why would I ever need to watch a movie more than once? There are so many things out there to watch." This was my first rewatch of Arrival since seeing it in theaters in 2016, and watching it again absolutely wowed me even more than the first time.

No longer was I the Forest Whitaker character, trying to figure out alongside him the mystery of the aliens,…

"Well somebody's got to do something!"

I'm not sure there's been a recent film that has more perfectly captured the journey from faith and optimism to total despair and radicalism that can occur in our present-day society, and it portrays that journey in a completely reasonable and understandable light in a way that many films have failed.

It's an Oscars crime that Hawke wasn't rewarded for this, especially considering who the nominees were that year.

The ending was beautiful and perfect and ambiguous in all the right ways.

A movie about the fact that no matter his age, the ever-changing movie industry, or new young hot shots trying to take his spot, Tom Cruise is never going away. And for that, we should all be thankful.

(I have a lot of questions about both the rules and strategy of dogfighting football.)

Line that made me laugh the most on this rewatch: "You're not my stepbrother anymore. You're a step... stranger."

Was feeling the general vibes on this for 45 minutes or so. Looked good and sounded even better. The dance dream sequence with McKenzie, Taylor-Joy, and Smith was really good. I just wish the script would have done the visuals/sound justice. It totally collapses on itself.

The movie becomes a recurring sequence of ghost scene, run away, don't tell anyone, ghost scene, run away, don't tell anyone. Over and over again. The ghosts also look very corny. This in turn…

The decision to tell this story from multiple perspectives was genius, and it’s all in the details. The way Marguerite’s shoes come off in her story versus the version from Le Gris. The way Le Gris’s “if you run, I’ll chase you” line goes from having a weird almost chivalrous tone in his mind to one filled with terror and menace. How Damon’s Jean is a brave soldier and gallant husband in his own mind and a fumbling disliked idiot…
