tick, tick...BOOM!

tick, tick...BOOM! ★★

"30 is still young, you know."

For someone like me with no interests in Broadway shows in general, tick, tick…BOOM! is a story with no meat. As Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut, tick, tick…BOOM! is unfortunately a forgettable, weightless biopic that feels overstretched and overdramatized.

tick, tick…BOOM! is ultimately a story about writing process, and about chasing dreams, which are probably the most overdone sub-genres in cinema, and tick, tick…BOOM! doesn't have a sensational enough story and distinctive enough style to make its 2-hour runtime worthwhile. There are musical numbers throughout, but they are not magnificent enough to win over the ears of a layman like me. The acting is decent from Garfield, while deeply lacking from Alexandra Shipp. Robin de Jesús, however, was my favorite of the cast, and ironically I would much prefer a 2-hour story straightly from his character's perspective, a unprivileged Latino gay man whose life fits the narrative as well, if not more, but I understand how this is Jonathan Larson's moment to shine, and not his.
