Nicolò Goattin’s review published on Letterboxd:
Don’t reeeeally know what it meant or what it was going for but it’s a really stylish film with a lot of crazy cinematography and effects. That alone makes it a good film.
The attempt to frame the original suspiria script in a wider frame works in parts for me. I understand the broader reason why the covent relates to the second world war, cuz it’s a response to the atrocities of the war, and in general the misogyny of the times.
I understand less how the old man’s story, and his wife’s connects to the coven.
But again, thinking about it I kinda like the patchwork feeling, cuz everything is thought out.
The fact that Dakota is Mother Suspirium is a bit crazy and doesn’t really lead to anything or do anything for me. Like what is she gonna do now? Not really satisfied with that.
But all in all good acting, nice music, crazy choreography and camera work (nice consistent colour), and I like how it’s not just trying to sensationalize violence like the original but it’s putting it in a wider context (berlin wall, world war 2..., the hamish?) trying to give it some more meaning.
