The SOV shlock I love….Man I’ve missed this. VHS has always done found footage right and 94 breathes life back into the franchise. Everything is ramped up to 11 and is a fucking blast. This will make everyone forget that Viral happened.

Insidious, Saw, and Upgrade thrown into a Henenlotter blender. It’s a fucking blast.

From the foggy graveyard shot early on I knew I was in for something special. You can see how influential Bava was for Italian cinema. So many set pieces and cinematography tricks have been reinvented by Argento, Fulci, and other staple directors.

Bay of Blood is still my favorite Bava, but this is a close second, especially if you are in the mood for something moody & gothic.

Eye gouges, machete traps, and the charred man 👨🏻🔥…I didn’t know Japanese gialli existed, but it’s my new favorite sub genre. Someone release the sequels. We need a box set!

    ★★★★★

    “We’re cooking quinoa!”

Lynch races the clock constructing the ultimate quinoa dish over a hot flame while sharing stories of moonless Yugoslavian nights when he bought some drinks from the sugar water man.

    This is a masterpiece

I’m always going to be thinking of those little quinoas bubbling away in that pan.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Only Gunn could give us mutant starfish kaiju and such a batshit (troma-esque) take on the comic movie formula. I’ve always had a soft spot for Harley but I think it’s time to pass the torch to our Rat Queen 🤌🏻🐀🐀🐀🐀. We also need a Weasel spinoff asap.

“There is one thing I’ll never lend to anyone..”

Wong at his most pretentious… I didn’t feel as emotionally invested as I did with other movies in the trilogy (especially ITMFL), but thats probably the point considering Chow’s arc. When you lose something you love you can’t try to replace it with the same thing and sometimes things just can’t be like they were before…

Stop trying to capture lost memories… make new ones

It’s a nice bag of bricks bookend to In the Mood for Love. It’s also a welcomed addition to my yearly Christmas rotation.

  • As Tears Go By

    As Tears Go By

    ★★★★½

Directorial debuts are usually some of the weakest entries in a filmmaker’s filmography, but still a fun way to see the birth of their style. I already kinda lumped this in my brain as WKW at his weakest/most amateur.. yea I was wrong… This was a breezy Triad crime drama mashed with romance like only Wong can do. It’s stylish as fuck and has a lot of heart.

The shootouts, the glass 🥛, *take my breath away*, and the pool table fight are all just 🤌🏻

We can just pretend they aren’t cousins 🙂
