    Final Destination 2

    ★★★

Final Destination 2 was always going to be on the backfoot, lacking the freshness of its predecessor, but its still a delightfully gory cheesefest that goes even further in its stupidity, but doesn't sacrifice any of the fun. These movies aren't as cheeky as the Scream films nor do they completely embrace their trashy B-movie stereotype (this one does it probably the best), but there's a grisly wit to how all the Rub Goldberg deaths pan out. There's a moment that occurs in all horror movies, when the scare happens, the instant jolt draws out any number of reactions out of audiences: fear, laughter, sadness, anger. Ocean's Eight

    ★★

Lacking the style and panache of the Clooney Oceans Eleven, this incarnation of Oceans Eight never quite gets off the mark. Gary Ross of Hunger Games fame seems largely sedate behind the camera never utilizing any sort of flourishes or inventiveness. Though Oceans Eight has some delightful chemistry among the crew and a pretty enjoyable second and third act, it falters in ways too difficult to overlook.

About 40 minutes into the film, I was beginning to get worried. From…
