When asked who my favourite horror villain is I have always said Freddy. Two years ago for Halloween I put a lot of effort into my Freddy costume and revisited all the films in order to get into character but I have not seen any of them since. I also wanted to take the opportunity to rewatch every major horror franchise to make sure that Freddy was still my favourite. I'm still not quite done but I think it's safe to say that he is.
Freddy is just badass. Where some of the other major villains simply hack away Freddy gets into your mind and fucks with you. Sleep deprivation is a serious thing and it doesn't take long before it really impacts your life. I think what truly makes him terrifying is that you cannot take a breather. The longer you avoid him the worse off you are and you have no hope of simply running far enough away or being saved.
I tend to have a lot of unpopular horror opinions and while I loved the original Nightmare on Elm Street as a whole the best, as it introduced my favourite villain, I much prefer how ridiculous the dreams (and how silly but still terrifying Freddy) became in the later films. But I like things cheesecore.
