this is just nervous praise but pawlikowski captures so naturally how state enforced cruelty and barriers fractured our parents and grandparents until they became so bitter, dispossessed in any nation, and left with folkloric shards of a national identity after the communist state was dissolved. 

 really cold war encapsulates that truth of how until the end of time- slavic longing and slavic suffering will always go hand in hand. such a sparkling piece of work with a better soundtrack, yet simultaneously as rough and blown out as its characters and setting. in summary: i was fucking devasted and full of joy at all times ahh!!

listen. i hate superhero movies more than any other genre but this was witty? endearing? actually funny? modern live action cape movies would be so much more disgestable if approached this way!!!

violent cruelty is definitely sexier when all the instigators are wearing corsets and powdered wigs

rough edged enough to stand out from most plastic wrapped modern biopics; but still choked by an inability to make its lead an actual 3D human who has more to offer than showy binge drinking and angsty poetry. this movie really proved that jaden smith was right when he said The Biggest Flex Anyone Will Ever Have Is Dying. 6.5/10
