"While heroes like the Avengers protect the world from physical dangers, we sorcerers safeguard it against more mystical threats."

Doctor Strange is a visual spectacle...a marvel...if you will. See what I did there? The effects used in this are arguably the most impressive in the entire MCU. The way director Scott Derrickson shot these shots was truly incredible. There are no scenes that are obviously fake. I like realism in my films about sorcerers thank you very much.

The acting of lead Benedict Cumberbatch is great as the titular hero and he is supported by a fantastic performance by Tilda Swinton as "The Ancient One." Benedict Wong is awesome in a smaller role. The cast is filled out by the likes of Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen. However, there roles just aren't given enough substance for them to sink their teeth into, although Ejiofor's arc becomes pretty intriguing by the final act. It's a real shame Mads was given a one-and-done role in the MCU as he is a great actor and it would've been really cool to see him more regularly.

The thing that stops this one from reaching the heights of say, Iron Man, in terms of introducing a new hero to the casual audience, is that the story is very generic and cookie-cutter and follows the MCU formula to a tee. It manages to hide some of that away with the visuals, and at least the magic adds a new wrinkle that doesn't make this seem stale, but you can definitely see the MCU tropes being put back to work.

This is still a very enjoyable watch but could've been truly great if they had changed the story formula instead of going back to the well again.
