"While I am state of the art, I am not a ninja."
Man, this was cool. A little slow at times but Upgrade is a violent, fun-filled revenge tale.
I thought the lead performance of Logan Marshall-Green was fantastic. There are scenes where you genuinely believe his body is doing one thing while his mind is thinking another. His character was also really well fleshed out so I wanted to see him succeed. The visuals were also great, from the cinematography to the practical effects (like when that dude's jaw gets fucked up.) Chris Stuckmann said that directors who always work with little to no budget are generally more creative and I couldn't agree more. Leigh Whannell did a great job directing (minus the pacing issues). The way the fight scenes were shot was quite creative as well. I also loved Stem. Whoever voiced him did a good job and he provided some moments of comedy which actually worked more often than not.
My biggest issue is everyone other than the lead. Their characters were shallow and the actors were either average (the cop, the main bad guy) to really weak (the scientist dude, the mother.) Notice I don't name the characters and that is because I can't remember their names cos I didn't give a fuck about any of them.
Overall, this is a pretty fun movie that could've done with an extra 10 to 20 minutes to help flesh out a couple of the other characters.
