classic example of a good idea and a bad script. even though you can see the twists coming a mile away they’re exciting, and the overall story is clever and engaging. but moment to moment it’s just dull and kind of trite, punctuated occasionally by moments of intense grossness.

what a wild movie. insane vanity project for Segal that indulges in all his signature tendencies: self-mythologization, admiration from a marginalized group, cultural appropriation, lazy martial arts where the stunt performers do ten times the work. but he also casts himself as an eco terrorist and ends the film with a somber five minute call to action about how we’re destroying the planet. also has genuinely fun, scenery chewing performances by the supporting cast and well constructed set pieces. is Segal a good director? what a world.

there’s stuff to like in this - Bautista and Notaro are both great — but Snyder’s weird Randian politics are present and the whole thing looks like it was shot on iPhone Portrait Mode. i think i need to come to terms with the fact that the Dawn of the Dead remake was the exception for me, Snyder-wise, and stop hoping for him to recapture what made that movie work.
