The Lighthouse is certainly engaging enough as an unsettling psychological horror experience, but it’s hard to say it all really works in service of something truly meaningful. Great performances, beautiful cinematography, a merciless score, and persistent mystery drive this film towards...an ending. It’s not a bad ending just like it’s difficult to call this a bad film, but something is missing. It may be weird — and that is certainly not a bad thing — but it’s not quite as profound, unforgettable, or shocking as it seems to be aiming for. The atmosphere, though, is off the charts.
