Gorgeous production design, an incredible Shigeru Umebayashi score (that propulsive main theme) and a cast of actors I love in a sequel to one of my favourite films of all time. And yet, both times I've seen this film I've struggled with it. My biggest problem is it's so long, filled with unnecessary detours and emotional dead-ends. It's unfocussed in a way I don't find much of Kar Wai's work. Some of this works (the future stuff is poignant and smart, while the revelation about Gong Li's character is beautifully done), but the rest is a slog. Worth seeing it in the cinema just so I could hear that main theme on ACMI's great speakers.
