noveltyhat’s review published on Letterboxd:
filmmaking that can only be described as velvety punctuated by deeply sensitive performances from everyone involved. there's very little to criticize about carol for what it is (aside from possibly the final few minutes, which i found a bit ham-handed visually and thematically). i just wish the romance was a little less superficial, although i remember feeling similarly about brokeback after my first go-round (not to group all of queer cinema into two movies, but they do have a lot in common). the material itself is so fragile and beneath the surface, but carol manages to stay as upfront and bold as possible throughout.
