    You’re sweet
    But weird
You’re not as weird as you think you are

Peak Texas and peak 80’s in the same strange stylish package. I had never heard of this movie before and I had almost no expectations, but it was way better than I expected. Everyone gives good performances, even bit parts like the interviewees in the shopping mall or the partying kids on the beach.

When the (unintentionally?) sped up version of Billy Idol’s Rebel Yell kicked in…

This is a movie that I got on DVD from a bargin bin at a Mexican grocery store years ago. I know almost no Spanish(except that muerte means “death”, which is why I picked this) but it’s a weirdly compelling and entertaining film regardless.

The plot seems to be about two brothers, Daniel Falcon(Gilberto Trujillo) and Raul Falcon(Raul Trujillo), who live an idyllic life dirtbiking on their ranch. Their father gets murdered during a dispute at a card game, so…

    Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

    ★★★

Definitely a lot less grounded in reality than the first Breakin’. The dance numbers have more people than ever, the outfits more ridiculous, and the neon is even brighter. Despite having actual stakes, it somehow feels even more aimless, as it feels like every scene is off to rush to a new location. It works in the movies favor, because there might be a boring dialogue sequence, that then gets followed up with a scene where Turbo is dancing on…

I watched Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo once during a bad movie night in High School, but never got to see this one. I think my friend rented a double sided DVD that had both films, but since this one didn’t have “boogaloo” in the title we just skipped to the sequel. It was one of a few we watched that night, and I can’t remember anything about it. But I wanted a change of pace from all the action movies…

Lots of the usual Van Damme goofiness, but I really liked this one. Instead of shoehorning Van Damme into playing an American with a French accent, he’s playing a Frenchman and the film starts off in France. It was disappointing that he got whisked off to New York City soo soon, but the whole mystery about his lost twin kept me gripped to the screen the whole time, and the (Toronto doubling as) New York setting is interesting on its…

Speaking of my experience as an American with close relatives in Australia, I think I have a enough expertise to conclude, “Yeah, those Australians are a weird mob all right.”

This film came at an interesting point in Australian history. The Australian film industry was close to non-existent in the 50’s and 60’s(if you check Letterboxd, there are several years without a single film), . It’s also set at an interesting point in the post-war immigration boom; the Menzie era…
