Turning point in Bergmans career. In 1955 a film truly ahead of its time.
Following the formula of pop culture docs that combine cinema verite with performances established in such films as Truth Or Dare or Unzipped, this film does a little more. It allows the scenes from real life to exist entirely on their own, without didacticism, effortlessly informing the performances adjacent to them. Some moments in the film borrow from Chantel Ackerman's framing and patient observation, while others are an explosion of sheer opulence of the spectacle.
