The Northman

The Northman ★★★★

So Robert Eggers' done it again. He's bewitched me once more with nothing but technical brilliance, and he might've just ruined other Viking films for me. The bar's too high now.

Just like his two previous movies, the costume design and dialogues are near perfect. And those shots of Iceland are simply gorgeous. Probably his best-looking film so far. But man, the score and music in this one; those drums. Maybe it's because it's the first time I've seen a film of his in theaters, but I felt like the score and music heightened that raw feeling of utter savagery and animality to another level.

Another thing is the ease with which Eggers synthesizes realism and fantasy. Those sequences that feel like horrible and equally magnificent hallucinations I could never get tired of. Witches, phantoms, rituals. He embodies it all brilliantly. Again, just mesmerizing and wild stuff.
