Oliver’s review published on Letterboxd:
Before Midnight is the ultimate conclusion to this powerful trilogy and a damn amazing one in my opinion. We now see Jesse and Celine nine years on from Before Sunset and this time once again it is set a different spot in their lives and it worked so perfectly within the story. I loved the direction that Linklater went with in this film. It showed how raw and real this love story truly could be and its absolutely excellent. For those of you who don’t know I absolutely love Marriage Story and it is one of my favourite films of all time. Part of why this film absolutely hit for me was that effect during the second half of this film similar to Marriage Story. The entire second half of this film I was glued to the screen and captivated. All leading up to that ending that truly told us the entire theme of this trilogy and what true love truly is. The raw dialogue in this film during that second half truly is some of the best of the trilogy and it really just makes you stare at the screen and just think. The first half of this screen although not as strong as the second was still great as it set up the second half of that screen and even included some vintage Jesse and Celine walks. Overall I really just loved this film and my second favourite of the trilogy after Sunset.
This trilogy as a whole was absolutely magnificent and I really didn’t except to love them and move me as much as they did. Just absolutely brilliant work by Linklater, Hawke and Depley across all 3 films. Excellent stuff.
