NON-COHERENT SPOILERY REVIEW AHEAD, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
Wow, I watched the movie almost 7 hours ago and I still cannot fully process it. I went in with a series of expectations and concerns but the film surpassed my expectations and didn't give in to my concerns!!!!!!!!!!
Firstly, the character development was BEAUTIFUL. From Rey, to Poe who did not actually have any in The Force Awakens, to Finn and to newbie Rose and to Luke and Leia - it was amazing. Secondly, this film did not rely purely on nostalgia which TFA did do, although I dearly love the film. I thought that Star Wars needed to move in a different direction for once and it did and I am so satisfied.
Comic highlights: Luke brushing dust off his shoulder against Kylo, the Porgs' faces at Chewie when he's trying to eat the bird, BB-8 doing pretty much anything.
General highlights: THAT LEIA SCENE. MY QUEEN, MY PRESIDENT. I STG IF ANYONE EVER TELLS ME LEIA IS NOT FORCE SENSITIVE I WILL SHOVE THAT SCENE IN THEIR FREAKING FACES. REY DOING ANYTHING, YOU'RE DOING AMAZING SWEETIE. "REBEL SCUM". FINN JUST BEING PURE GOOD. POE BEING A BRAVE AND AMAZING LEADER. ROSE BEING KIND AND COMPASSIONATE. THE LIGHTSABER WITH REY AND KYLO AGAINST SNOKE'S SOLDIERS. REY AND LEIA HOLDINGS HANDS AT THE END. LUKE LOOKING AT THE TWO SUNS' SUNSET LIKE IN A NEW HOPE. LUKE AND YODA'S SCENE. REY MIRRORING HAN SHOOTING IN THE MILLENIUM FALCON. I DON'T KNOW, THIS ENTIRE MOVIE. I JUST REALLY LOVED IT.
Questions: - I don't know how they are going to show Leia's death - I assume offscreen with a time gap if they do not use CGI (which I think should not be done out of respect for Carrie's memory, as much as I miss her and I will miss Leia.)
- I'm okay with Rey not being related to anyone we know (I honestly just did not want Reysky and asshole reysky fans to win) but I still feel weird about that scene and about the mirror scene and wonder whether they could be bluffing or not...
All in all, I still love the idea that anyone can be powerful (although I would so love Rey to be an Organa-Solo but at this point IDK how they'd pull it off) because we all have the Force inside of us. That shot of the kid at the end...THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL AND THAT WAS HOPE.
