Synecdoche, New York

Synecdoche, New York ★★★★★

sometimes i wonder if i’m too self-absorbed. then sometimes i think i don’t care enough about myself. and then sometimes i just want to lay on the ground for 10 years. this movie takes all of that, shoves it into philip seymour hoffman’s brain, and makes you sad for 2 hours.

i loved this a whole lot. obviously philip seymour hoffman is perfect (i’m starting to think he’s the best actor of the last 20 years).  the movie’s realism is stretched just about as far as it can go, and as it goes on, it pretty much lets go of any semblance of realism entirely. there were a few specific scenes that absolutely wrecked me (his daughter recounting the game she’d play when she was little was particularly gutwrenching lol) but at the same time the whole movie has a comedic undercurrent, in a “is this for real?” way. man i loved it. i’ll be thinking about it for the rest of my life maybe. and i kind of want to watch it again. happy 300th review and cheers!
